i remember having that, some moog lit on mini and sonic six, arp on odyssey,
buchla music easel, ems data sheets ( i think i still have these ! ), eml 101
and paia docs. these were all pre-1973 as i was still in high school. got my
first paia modular ( with the wire / button kybd ) right after getting out. i
guess i have always been out of the mainstream because i remember that the
units that impressed me were the vcs3/aks, eml 101 and music easel. moog and
arp didn`t ignite my interest. bought the first paia because the whole kit
package was something like $150 ( controller,pwr/interface panel,vco,lp
vcf,bp vcf,vca,ar e.g.,lfo/noise). about 2 years later, my 3rd synth was
another paia modular, this time with a real kybd, all the above modules plus
their first add-ons, an inverter/buffer,sine/pwm convertor and an env.
follower. paid $100 for this one used. built a box holding all the modules
with the new kybd in the old case and this was the system later given to the
school. a couple of years later, added the eml101 and that held me until my
first really serious modular unit came along via an insurance check.
it may just be nostalgia on my part, but i sometimes miss all my kludgey old
radio / junk e.m. stuff and my array of tormented mono tube tape recorders (
did some weird things to them and they still worked ! ) and even the paia. it
had a unique character. plus , early on i learned to do stuff like feed the
wrong wave shapes into the sine/pwm converter to get odd sounds, their lp
vcf, while super elementary, was actually a simple vc slope with a fixed
freq. which was surprisingly useful. ( paul, ever given any thought to a vc
slope vcf - having used it before on the serge, it is a very useful thing to
add to a vcf design. i`ll assume you`ve read the basis article about
instrument synthesis by david luce, formerly of moog music ).
anyway, enough nostalgia and rambling........off to make dinner........
