Quick update - I just had to come home for lunch and try this and it works great. Just a little minor additional wiring in the unit itself and with the use of a small radio shack project box, a 9volt battery and 2 1/4" jacks & I'm in business!
Now later I'll take it further but for now I better get back to work!
