Subject: RE: [motm] MOTM vs Moog panel grid

I know it isn't the most accurate source and not very complete but FWIW looking at the Modular Grid site MU 'appears' to be about twice as popular as MOTM?

MOTM
325 modules from 20 manufacturers

MU
625 modules from 40 manufacturers

The module counts are probably significantly less since there are lots of dupes, one-offs and prototypes listed and the number of manufacturers is . . . well, there are some that aren't listed that exist and some that are listed that don't exist anymore?

Well, I think 'grid' is misused here. You are talking panel widths.

'Grid' refers to all the MOTM pots and jacks aligning on BOTH horizontal and vertical 'lines'.

Back to the OP

Without Roger's sales figures, it's hard to say which is more 'popular', as this has 2 contexts: historically or ∗right this very minute∗.

It would not surprise me if .com/MU overtook MOTM as 'popular' by say 2012. There are somewhere around 10,500 MOTM modules + MOTM ∗format∗ modules in the wild.

Who knows what .com/MU is, with now Moon and COTK adding in, maybe 30,000?

OK, Guys - while I've got your ear(s), help me out here - Will and I are necessarily MOTM-grid guys. Namely, 5U high by widths in increments of "Units" (equals 1-3/4 in). The Moog grid is, of course, 5U high, but by widths of 2-1/8 in. The history of these standards is interesting and is part of the legacy of the Bell Telephone System. But, however interesting, that is irrelevant here. My question is - in your experience, what is the relative popularity of these standards - the MOTM-grid vs the Moog-grid? thankyouverymuch Bill and WIll
