So it's finally out. However, now that samples from the CD are available,
it's far from a synth CD. Seems like it's almost all samples except for
3/4's of Bolero. So much for a long awaited synth CD from him. On his
first CD from 20 years ago he rejected using samples (except for a couple of
real cymbals), but even that was somewhat of a disappointment because he
ended up using a gang of Yamaha TF-1 FM digital synths creating unpleasant
FM brass and thin string sounds. His earlier Minimoog version sounded
better and was a far more impressive feat with what he accomplished with it.
I don't ever expect to see a 100% analog synth CD consisting of composed
music of substance and impressive synth programming ever again. And that's
the misserable and depressing state the dead art of synthesis and synth
music is in. 27 years of that dry spell and counting. However, his Bolero
synth chart is nice and the cover art is great and reminds me of those
artist's conceptions I used to see in Omni magazine showing our future in
space.
On a somewhat related note, I had noticed that Drew Neuman called for some
kind of Tomita/Space Music type competition on AH (which I'm not currently
subbed to). I'm sure nobody will do anything for it and it's probably dead,
but I was thinking of doing something anyway. I would limit myself to my
most limited and basic synth, my Multimoog, and some effects devices and
turn out something that sounds like Tomita with his studio full of synths
and other keyboards. That's partly inspired by what Amin Bhatia was able to
accomplish with just his Minimoog.
