#8 is just a name or tag rather than a measure (like fractions of an
inch)?

I found a shop here in Vienna which is reportedly specialised in
"exotic" hardware stuff. I'll have a look how good they are.

Absolutely!
But I got a couple of second hand rack rails where some threads are
bad by forcing in some wrong screws. I'm trying to fix that with the
proper tap since that bad holes damage the original screws as well
besides just scraping off the paint and looking ugly.
