I think the 520 or mock-up of said device is money the way it is, weirdness!
9 syncopated VCOs, it is only natural that you would hear a heterodyne effect, almost gives you the ability to mess with your listeners minds! :|

The "stepping" is not a 'zipper' or some evil digital thing :)
It has to do with the 9 VCOs beating and "to and fro" as they spread apart.
