I working on getting a pair of cases similar to what you describe.
The case itself is shallow, but the lids are somewhat deeper than
normal, meaning that the latches can be reversed (residing on the
lids rather than on the case) so that with lids removed the latches
are out of the way. Ideally, with this design I'll actually be
able to move a case with cables still attached.
