You probably wanted to hear from Ken, but here are a few suggestions
anyway:

∗ Roland SE-50 (noisy but cool) or SE-70 (more 'modern')
∗ Lexicon sells several budget but great sounding rack devices (MX?)
∗ Carvin sells a GREAT unit very cheap
∗ Guitar multi-effects (BOSS, Korg, take your pick) work really well
on synths
