World's First Dual 16-Bit, 1 GSPS Interpolating DAC: Delivers Industry's Best Noise, Distortion, and Power Consumption

he evolving requirements of wireless communications, test instrumentation, and broadband are driving the need for more optimized DACs that can synthesize high quality signals at much higher output frequencies. Designers are faced with meeting today's standards in a cost-effective fashion, while planning for future standards that have yet to be fully defined. Wireless system architectures are trending toward multichannel designs that support multiple air standards, such as WCDMA, CDMA2000, TD-SCDMA, and WiMAX. The increased linearity requirements of multichannel, multistandard transmit designs create the need for digital predistortion architectures, adding further demands on digital-to-analog converter performance. Test instrumentation designers must meet even more stringent requirements to provide greater margins for measurement accuracy. All of these goals must be achieved while holding cost down and meeting time-to-market needs.
The AD9776 /AD9778 /AD9779 family of pin-compatible 12-/14-/16-bit, dual-interpolating DACs is designed to meet the challenges of wireless communications. Based on ADI's world-class 0.18 µm CMOS DAC core, the new AD977x family provides the industry's best noise and distortion performance, while consuming the lowest power of converters in its class. These features enable system designers to meet today's demands cost effectively, providing performance margins for future requirements. In addition to a 1 GSPS sample rate, the 16-bit, dual DAC AD9779 offers 4 dB lower noise and 15 dB better intermodulation distortion (IMD) than competitive devices at a 70 MHz output frequency, providing low power consumption of 600 mW at 500 MSPS and 1 W at 1 GSPS.
