At least in Canada You can call customs& you can find out the status of the package (ie if it’s beenthrough customs, if it’s sitting there, or if it’s left). I’mnot sure about other countries.
Also, for what it’s worth, UPS is byfar the most expensive way to get something across the border. Their customs(brokerage) charges are based on the value of the item, and are not a set fee. I’ve had $90 brokerage charges from them before (not including duty &taxes). You might actually save money by having it shipped by a faster courier

Subject: [motm] ∗∗∗ImportantForeign shipping Info∗∗∗
Since Christmas, I have received several "complaints" thatmodules shipped
overseas by US Mail is taking a very long time toarrive.
I think that customs offices are to blame, as wellas generally slow mail
service.
Also: these types of packages ARE NOT TRACKABLE.We cannot track them for you.
Chances are, they are just sitting in your localcustoms office/post office.
Now, there are ∗2∗ ways that we can ship so thatyour modules can be tracked AND
delivered in less than 5 days: UPS Global and EMS .
Both of these methods are fully tracked (UPS hasstation-by-station tracking,
EMS does not but I've never had a lost EMS package in 9 years). Of course,
either method is expensive - $35 for thefirst module, $18 for each module
after that. Rails add $18/pr.
So, if you ∗really∗ want to be able to track yourshipment and get about 4 day
delivery, just put EXPRESS SHIPPING in the commentfield.
