Greg, I think you need at least 575 cables. Maybe 850 is about right
<snicker> OK, maybe I am stretching it a little. :-) Could there be a
conflict of interest since I sell them? Oh crap, my secret is out. :-)
Actually, I think you plan sounds pretty good. Not one person has ever
e-mailed me and said. "I bought too many cables." But, many people have
ordered multiple times as their systems grew.
Just remember that:
1 footers are only good for modules that are basically side by side. You can
skip over 1U or 2U width.
2 footers will comfortable reach from row above to row below or across 10U
side to side.
3 footers will reach about 17 U side to side
4 footers will reach almost anything in a 2 row x 24U wide cabinet. I have
one in my cabinet from top row right to bottom row left module and it is
fine, but completely used up. However, that is with jacks at the bottom of
the panel
5 footers will be almost never use in a 2 row 24U cabinet. You will not
need many of these.
Best
Larry

Subject: [motm] patch code quantity?
I have a slightly different patch cord question - hopefully one of the
seasoned veterans on this list can offer some sage advice...
I'm building a system which basically fills the typical 24U x 2 row
case. Having never patched a modular before I'm at a bit of a loss when
it comes to the number of cables to buy. My crude estimation attempt
landed me at roughly 53 (just counting up the number of inputs across
all modules I could see used in a fully patched mutli-timbrel setup).
Does 53 sound a bit high to anyone with a system of this size? For
reference it consists of:
4 x 300
4 x 800
2 x 190
1 x 101
1 x 120
2 x 320
2 x 420
2 x 440
2 x 485
1 x 700
1 x 820
1 x 890
1 x UEG
1 x FS
and
1 x 650 (with fingers are crossed for Feb 2005 :)
I figure about 2/3 of the cables would be 2-3 ft while the remaining
1/3 would be 1 ft or 4 ft (and longer).
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks,
-greg
