Hi Eric,
Congrats on finishing your first kit. I have a similar setup as you
(808 & 101) with the 420 being my only filter at the moment There
are some neat things you can do with it, despite it being your only
module. The most obvious thing to do with the 420 would be to
filter audio from your drum machines, synths, and what ever other
equipment you may have. You can also use the 420 during mix down as
low pass or hi pass filter to remove unwanted frequencies.

You can do some other stuff by turning the resonance up all the way
to make the filter self oscillate. First of all, you can play
melodies with the oscillating filter by sending CV out from your 101
or 202 into the 1V/OCT input on the 420. The problem is you don't
have a VCA to control amplitude, so you will continue to hear the
filter self oscillate even when you have released a key.

Try turning the 420's resonance up, so the filter oscillates. Now
dial the resonance back just a hair so it stops. You want the
filter on the verge of oscillating. Now take a trigger out from
your 808 and plug it into the FM input #1. The trigger will excite
the filter into oscillation and it will decay naturally if you have
the resonance set right. Experiment with the FM input going from
negative to postive and you will see it has an impact on the attack
of the sound. The frequency control will change the pitch of the
sound. You can get anything from kick drums, toms, pings and plinks.
You've got a very basic percussive voice here that can be triggered
in time with your 808.

Finally make the 420 oscillate and try plugging the output of the
420 into the modulation grip input on your SH-101. You can use the
420 to modulate the 101's VCO's pitch or the VCF's cutoff
frequency. The smaller sliders in the bender section will control
how much of the CV generated by the 420 reaches the 101's VCO and
VCF. You've now got an extra modulator to work with in the 101.
Try increasing the frequency of the 420 filter into the audio range
for some cool fx the 101's LFO can't pull off.

I hope this helps you out.. remember to be careful when using the
420 as an oscillator because it is possible to blast your ears or
speakers.

420 filter. i really likr the way it sounds but had some questions
about a few things. i have a mostly roland setup analog wise and
plan on using my mc202 and sh101 to trigger this thing. do i have to
send it a gate signal or would a trigger from an 808 or 909 work as
well? i also have access to a juno6 but dont know if i can do
anything with that and havent tried. paul said the cv changes the
resonance setting, will a trigger signal change this to the new
value instantaneously or can i get a gradual change? how do you guys
like to use your 420 filter?
