It depends on how you want to process the audio of your
roland synths. You can simply route the synth through the
filter and set the '420 frequency and reso pots to some
value and that's it. It ∗will∗ change the sound, but it's
sort of static.

You get a more exiting sound if you can get the filter's
sound to change at each new note you play on your synth.
You normally use an envelope generator for that, like the
MOTM-800 EG. You feed the EG the gate or trigger signal,
and connect the output of the EG to the FM input of your
420. Now every time the EG gets triggered, the filter can
be opened and close in some fashion. That's when you get
the classic synth effect. And I can tell you that the '420
is great for that stuff!
