The guy describes some kind of dbx 3dx device. I don't see the connection based on his description. dbx however did have an audio enhancer product similar to the BBE, Aphex, and SPL units. That would have been a direct comparison. And I'm not sure what's inside matters, but rather what it does. Years ago when I was visiting Goodman Music, a guy there was criticizing the Aphex Aural Exciter saying that all it did was generate some kind of high frequency distortion that fooled the ear into thinking it was hearing recovered high freq audio.

I have three different units (BBE, Aphex, Behringer). I've listened to at least two if not all three on recorded orchestral works, and all I can say is that it's hard to go back to listening without using them. I was hearing things I wasn't before, like squeeky chairs, pages of music turning and so forth. Instruments stood out clearer and had a more 3D sound. So they seem to do something beyond EQ.
