I think that is also the consensus of most people John.  I think having the front sub-D connector is essential.  I just thought having a PCB mounted header would be cool to for the minority of Stooges like me that have plans for a couple of strategically mounted panel sticks.

My two cents here: I think a joystick would be more useful if were not panel mounted -- I'm not saying having one is a bad idea but (even for keyboard players -- no, especially for keyboard players) having a free standing one which could be placed to the left of a keyboard (or anywhere else) would be much handier.
