I think the remaining confusion in terminology is that you have to always
consider the human ear. As was pointed out, the VCA doesn't "expect"
anything, it's just a multiplier. It is the human ear that 'expects'
something. The human ear hears does not hear linear increases in sound
pressure as a linear rise in volume.
