SMT stands for Surface Mount Technology. It means the components are
very tiny, and the boards are usually assembled by robots (or tiny
elves with tiny fingers). There are no through holes for components,
all components are mounted on the surface of the board and (I think)
wave soldered. That's my understanding, anyway. Computers are full
of SMT, as are cellphones and most "digital lifestyle" devices. It's
for making electronic gadgets smaller and smaller. Many caps and
resistors in SMT are the size of poppy seeds.
