Gents, I want your opinion once again. This is not a choice as all cables
will be one way or the other. This refers ONLY to those of you asking for
inside shrink (all but 2).
I have found two different methods for installing heat shrink on the inside
of the barrel. One covers only the stress relief and some of the cable, and
one goes completely over all the solder joints. See link below.
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/cable/shrink.jpgI have played with BOTH here extensively and I do not think the extra shrink
over the connections adds any to the strength. Once you get it down over
the stress relief, I think you have added all the strength you are going to
add. The connector has a plastic sleeve inside the barrel to protect from
shorts against the metal. So, no value for the extra length there..
Therefore, my opinion is that the shrink should not go all the way down and
cover the tip solder connection. I think it will make it more difficult to
see damage and repair it. But, tell me what you think and I will take it up
with the manufacturer. I'm not sure how Rapco would normally do it since
they normally shrink this cable on the outside. But, I have an order for
1890 cables that says I bet I get to choose. :)
