My 2 cents on the cable issue..

first of all, for me cable identification only was used for two purposes. to trace/tune/diagnose a patch and to help when taking patches apart. no other uses for it!! (for me at least)

I had 3 colors of cable and used 5 different colors of heatshrink to identify them.. so this gave me.. 15 combos. I made two of each combo (30 total) and on half of them, I put an additional band of black heatshrink half the length of the colored heatshrink. so for example I would have a black cable with red heatshrink and also a black cable with red and black shrink.. so this gave each cable its own identity without having an eye hurting/distracting/tiring rainbow of 10 different colors of cable infront of me. just three mellow colors of cable with colored ends.
So if you take Pauls helpful idea of cable color for length, you now have 10 or so colors of heatshrink (thanks larry!) to identify the cables beyond cable color.
I didnt bother using a specific color for audio or whatever, (way anal) but used the colors to help me when in mid patch to trace and tune things. And when taking patches apart, its quicker and neater to unplug one cable at a time, one end then the other end of the same cable.. (as opposed to my concussor where I grab the mess of em and pull the whole thing out!)
