Subject: Re: [motm] Cabinet Power!

I'll offer my $.02. I did basically 2b, with some of 1. I have one large
supply for everything +/- 15. Then, I will have another supply that is
triple output I will use for all modules that require that and other modules
in that cabinet that do not.

So, here are some observations
1. is the easiest. Making custom panels with custom power plugs to go from
cabinet to cabinet is a pain. # 1 is also probably the most expensive.

2. My choice. But, biased by the fact that I purchased NOS (old 2 years
old according to date code) +/- 15 VDC 5000 ma each output Power One
supplies for $24.95 each surplus.

I can't see 3 better than 2 unless you want it to be more portable. So, one
SKB effects size rack with power supply and nothing but nodules in the pop
ups.

as to choices a) through d), I think that would be biased by the number of
modules needing +5 in your system and how many power supplies you already
own. If I were buying supplies for the job, I would lean toward b). But,
if I already had my supplies and just found out (what the heck) that now
some modules will need +5 as some did a while back, I would probably try c).
5 volt supplies to add on are common. Someone had surplus here recently for
about $5 and linear to boot. d) makes little sense to me because you will
likely have MUCH more +5 capacity in such a supply than you need. b) is
still a better cost choice than a). So, I think b) or c) depending on
whether you have supplies already.

Ok, it's cabinet power supply time! There will be three homebrew cabinets
in
this setup: lower, middle and upper.

Here's the distribution possibilities:

1) each cabinet has it's own supply
2) power supply(s) in lower cabinet with wiring to other cabinets
3) external power supply box with wiring to each cabinet

and then power choices:

a) one +-15V supply and one 5V supply for 500/600 modules, one larger +-15V
supply for the rest
b) one triple output +-15V and 5V supply for 500/600 (ala 950), and one
larger
+-15V supply for the rest
c) one big +-15V supply for all modules and one 5V supply
d) one honkin triple output +-15V and 5V supply for all modules

This looks like a matrix problem to me! So, what's the best solution
overall?
2b or not 2b? :) Comments, opinions and plusses/minuses solicited, please!
