Since I am right-hand dominant traditional with a keyboard, so this fits
with me. However, I would like to hear from others that are not
"traditional"- there may be a reasonable alternative that is not geared
towards one "type".

I think what makes sense is to orient the GATE buttons with the GATE
jacks. If GATE1 jack is above GATE2 jack then GATE1 button above GATE2
button makes sense. But if GATE1 jack is the left neighbor of GATE2 jack,
then align the buttons the same way. I think it is easier to associate
pots, jacks, buttons (whatever) that have the same horizontal or vertical
alignment than to orient them perpendicularly (as in the 440 mixer pots
and input jacks).
