Well, the article is in somewhat bad taste (the nickname of the
person who wrote it is a bit crude), but it's probably worth looking
it. It details a serious hackjob for hand-soldering durface mount
devices with pin spacings of 0.5mm. It appears to work, but WOW what
a hack. Still, it's pretty interesting.

could, theoretically, help (though I'm not sure if this technique
would actually work for the more 'friendly' pin spacings).
