Subject: Re: [motm] MOTM-820 and OMS-820 behind one 2U panel?

Richard,   Your idea looks do-able to me.  Certainly from a fit behind the panel perspective there would be plenty of room behind a 3U panel.  The Stooge 4-pot short bracket is an exact fit to the MOTM-820 PCB including all the holes in the right places.  The OMS-820 PCB will fit on many of my brackets (PCB mount hole drilling required).

Sadly, the one thing we cannot do (providing a 3U panels for less than $30) is quick.  We rely on volume to keep prices down. Which means waiting for ordering in large groups.  Schaeffer is no doubt the way to go.

I am not sure you would have to give up features.  As I see it, a 3U panel with the MOTM-820 and OMS 820 would have room for 16 jacks on the bottom 3 rows and up to 9 pots/controls.  That is more than the current MOTM-820 and stand along OMS-820 1U Stooge panel (which of course has only the features implemented that fit into 1U).

I assume that your desire for a 3U panel comes from wanting different features that those implemented in the Stooge 1U OMS-820 add on which would yield 3U total.

Subject: [motm] MOTM-820 and OMS-820 behind one 2U panel?

I've been tossing this about in my mind.  I really like the idea of the OMS-820 module enhancement to the MOTM-820.  But, being the "panel density" freak that I am, I was wondering if I could stuff these two behind one custom 2U panel.  I would lose a bit of the total features of both modules in the 3U format, but I would pick the panel features I'm most interested in.  I have not decide these exactly, yet.  But I could do without the bypass switch and light on the MOTM and the gate and reset buttons on the OMS for starters.  The extra output jacks on the MOTM could be replaced by the gate and reset inputs of the OMS.  I would rearrange it all.

The panel would be my own design, and I would get it custom made, maybe by Schaeffer. (I don't want to wait for the next Stooge panel order).  I don't know how the Oakley board would fit behind the panel, but since it is inverse in symmetry from the MOTM board, both boards might both actually fit to the panel.  The left side of the panel would match the OMS panel design almost exactly, including the lights, but with jacks where the two pushbuttons are located.  I would need to mount the MOTM board with a Stooge bracket, since the MOTM bracket uses standoffs embedded in the MOTM panel.

I would like to build two of them.  My plan is to purchase two MOTM 820's and two OMS-820 boards and parts.  At that point I could look everything over and decide on the panel strategy.  It could possibly fail to fit, and I'd be left with 6U of real estate instead of 4U.

I was wonder what everyone thought about this somewhat hare-brained idea.  The panels would be costly, but I would need panels for the OMS-820's anyway.
