I have a question, which is obviously a little premature as I (we) have not received my 490 yet.
If the Minimoog sound is in part the interaction of the VCF and the VCA, is there a way to simulate/duplicate that effect with modular synthesis? Is it a feature of the hard wiring on the mini?
As modular synthesis is a wonderful world of options, I would like to be able to have the ability to make my modular sound like a mini if that seemed like the best musical option to me at the time. Its not a live or die issue at all, its just that I'ld rather get more modules than invest in an extensive analog monosynth collection I wont be able to afford for a while. The modular synth is primarily a studio instrument, and the options that exist with modular synth are enhanced as a recording tool if it actually can replace/duplicate some other synth sounds as well as creating its own unique vocabulary.
This is in no way is a statement of dissapointment with the 420, 440, or comming 490 and 480 (and 410, but of course thats a little different as it aint a lowpass). Just wondering, 'cause reactions to this kind of question have largely appeared to be "Be more creative with modular synth and dont make it sound like a Minimoog" and "The minimoog sounds great, but not all are the same" rather than "This is how you can make it sound like a Mini if you really wanted to"
The ergonomics points make sense, but the Mini I used for a while fell apart quickly and has needed repair for years (personal issue between myself and my pop who is actually the owner/possessor of the Mini) so my main reactions to a mini is from listening and remembering what it sounds like rather than 20-30 years of playing a mini. The analog ergonomics that I am actually bonding with are MOTM (well, and acoustic piano). I imagine the issue of the ergonomics are not as universal/widespread as issues with the sound.
