This looks like a nice project. I bought a few of these touchpads myself with the same intentions, but have neverfreed up enough time to get past the block diagram stage. Good luck on yours. These seem to have an advantage over ajoystick as you can instantaneously jump to any voltage. They could also be tied to a specializedquantizer type circuit and function as a rudimentary, monophonic style “keyboard.” It would be simple enough to createtemplates placed under the glass for any configuration of “keys.”

Subject: [motm] Pacific NW SDIYMeeting & analog touch panel controller
I took my MOTM system to Saturday's synth DIY meeting, along with myDIY
touch panelcontroller project.
A while backthere was some traffic on synth-diy about ribbon controllers,
and thenLarry Hendry posted his notice about a good deal on Bourns pots at
ElectronicsGoldmine. I poked around that site looking for other promising
deals, andfound surplus ELO touch screens for $5 each. These are glass
panels youput over an LCD screen to make a touch-sensitive computer input
device.
I orderedone and did a little research on the 'net. It turned out to be a
5-wireresistive touchscreen, which wasn't too hard to interface. I built a
device witha microcontroller and a couple of sample-and-holds which
generates agate when you touch the screen along with analog voltages
proportionalto the X and Y position you touch, sort of like a
two-dimensionalribbon controller. It has a few bugs and unfinished
features,but its basically working.
Anyway, people seemed to like playing around with it at the meeting. I've
set up a(rudimentary) page about it at
http://www.fuzzer.com/Synthesizers.html. Unfortunately, I've been rather
busy sinceSat. and don't have my pictures posted yet. You can see a
picture of the touch panel with the MOTM in Toby Paddock'spictures, though.
