How about panels silkscreened with "This Space Intentionally Left Blank".

Some of us simply use thin white tape to separate modules. If it still looks
like a confusing sea of knobs after that you might want to do something I
tried as a test awhile back. Use Letraset Letrafilm Color/Tint Overlay to
color code different knob functions. Just stick a piece of it ontop of a
knob, use a sharp exacto knife and cut around the aluminum/chrome knob top,
remove scrap Letrafilm, and bingo, you can now have knobs with metalic blue,
metalic red, or other color tops. It will add a lot of pretty color to an
otherwise monotone synth.
