I suppose it might have been a sample, since it seems to only have a handful of pitches, but given the relative simplicity of the sound, I'm sure it could be synthesized. There's a quality about the sound which my lack of practical synth expireince prevents me from grasping or creating.
i'm pretty convinced it's a sample, possibly through some sort of filter.
it sounds samply, plus the album was made in the heyday of sampler use in
industrial music. to reproduce it, i might take a cello or some other solo
string preset from a k2000 or something and run it through a 420, or
perhaps two in series (hp-lp).
