A RM produces the sum and difference of 2 input ∗audio signals∗. For example, if X IN was 100Hz
and Y IN was 300Hz, the output is a ∗mixture∗ of 200Hz and 400Hz.

The output of a RM sounds "metallic" because the resultant mixture of frequencies are not
harmonically related (ie based on 12th root of 2 intervals)
