At one time I was curious about this as well, so I did a little digging and
here's what I found:

Spectrol 148 Conductive Plastic:
+-20% tolerance, 100,000 rotations
half as noisy as the 149
wider available resistance ranges

Spectrol 149 Cermet:
+-10% tolerance, 50,000 rotations
handles twice the power of the 148
more temp stable & can handle higher temp

BTW: mouser.com lists these as the same price.

What’s the difference between the 148 and 149 other then one is cermet? Why
choose one over the other, if they are the same value wouldn’t they operate
the same?
