Subject: 2 prong outlets

Hi everyone.  I have a question for the electrical experts out there:  I am moving in the next several weeks, and my new home is in a 100+ year old building here in San Francisco.  The only problem with the place is that is has old style 2 prong plugs everywhere.  Obviously this poses problems for my MOTM and other synth/audio/electronic equipment.  What is the proper way to get around this without having to rewire and install new outlets, which is aparently out of the question, as it violates some sort of SF building code.  The landlord suggested something he described as an outlet box with three prong plugs that plugs into the two prong outlet, and has a  wire that goes to the center screw of the old outlet that grounds it.  Does something like that really work, or are there better solutions?  Is there some type of grounded power strip that has a 2 prong plug but 3 prong outlets?  What about those 2 to 3 prong 'ground-lift' adaptors you find in the hardware store (which seem kind of hokey anyway...)?  Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.
