Another thing to try for this effect is to use a vco (tuned fairly high -- like mid kHz) to drive a vc divider. Use the output of the divider as your audio, and sweep the divider from one to 16 (or 32) to sweep through increasingly lower harmonics -- an lfo or eg is good for this.

What's that? You don't have a vc divider?

When I do this, I often use two vcos (one to FM the other) to get a very rich harmonic background to sweep across. If you use the vcfs to pick off harmonics, remember to use a harmonically rich waveform (like a saw or square -- or some rich FM) so you have something to hear when the filter peak passes a harmonic.
