The hiss in my samples comes clearly from the Synthi Clone's
VCA and the rest of the signal path. No such hiss in the
filter (or in the final JH-5A for that matter).
I don't know about the Roger Arrick filter, so I cannot
comment on this. In general, the choice of transistors will
directly have an influence on the noise, for a given
architecture.
Now if you compare the Moog Ladder structure with the SSM2040
or it's descendant, the MOTM-440, the 440 will win in most
every category, ∗except∗ that typical "trademark Moog" sound.
It's no secret that the SSM2040 is my all time favorite.
I used to say "you need to have one Moog VCF for that special
sound, but that's enough", and consequently I used a single
(Minimoog clone) Moog style filter and several SSM2040 style
filters all these years. But recently I decided that the
"one Moog filter sound" that I wanted was the one from the
Modular, not from the Mini. I even consider to sell my MidiMini
rackmount Mini clone to make space in the studio. (If anybody
offers me an outrageous amount of money and picks it up at
my home, that is - so it's more than likely that I'll keep
it for a while (;->) ...)
Ah, I forgot, I also have a Moog Taurus I filter clone for some
years now. Clearly too many Moog filters ! (;->)
