I used tolex to cover my MOTM cabinet. It's not the elegance of wood, of course, but the stuff works like a dream. By that, I mean that it's stable enough to be strong but stretches just enough to make it easy to apply. It's relatively expensive but worth the money, IMO.
I bought some from a guy in town who recovers Fender amps. He gave me all the tips for using it. Use 3M Spray 90 for adhesive and use a new exacto knife for the trimming after applying the tolex. I bought metal corner protectors so I wouldn't have to worry about my corners. You should go to local music stores, etc to look at the Fender method of covering. There seems to be a standard for overlapping (when to, when not to, and how much), and corner work that Fender has used over the years.
One last tip, I covered my cabinet in August (warm time). I bet the stuff doesn't work so well in January so apply it while in a warm room.
