I don't know if these are the NASA certified techniques, but one way is to
clip the leads off close to the resistor, leaving the lead protruding from
the board, and solder the new resistor to the leads. The other way I've
tried is to heat the pads and gently pull the resistor out, followed by
the solder sucker. You can then insert the resistor into the pads and
solder from the top side. Clip the leads short first. This works ok on
high quality boards like the MOTM's, but be very careful on boards of
lesser quality.
