You know, I've noticed the same thing, repeatedly. If I create an MP3 from a
CD, it usually sounds great, but when I turn the encoder loose on my own
music it inevitably sounds muddy, sometimes even distorted. I kept thinking
that I'm either doing something wrong or that I don't mix down my music
well, but I finally decided that it was the encoder to blame.
It reminds me of the compromises that people used to have to make to
"pre-crunch" their music so that it wouldn't foul up vinyl cutters. You
know, massive equalization, reduction of stereo detail, etc. Now similar
compromises are demanded by the MP3 format. Everything right is wrong again.

The 2 sound samples demonstrate just how flakey MP3 encoding is. The 1st
demo sounds pretty lame compared
to the CD, the 2nd one MUCH better. The 'perceputal coder' the MP3 uses
wasn't tweaked for electronic
music.
