i didn't see this part of the original post... anyway, you don't need to
waste a vco; just patch in an extra EG (untriggered) into fm1. this acts
as a bias voltage. 80 hz is real easy to get using this method.
set all times (a, d, r) on the eg to zero, then adjust the fm1 amt on the
320 and the sustain on the 800 to get the proper frequency. of course, you
could trigger the 800 and put a short attack and release on it so the
growl fades in on note (or accent) on and out on note (or accent) off...
but i don't know if that's appropriate.
