Hello Roy, and welcome!
The major issues to consider when determining your power supply requirements
is what the target size of your MOTM system is, and how many cases there
will there be. If, like most of us, it'll grow for as long as you breathe,
then you should plan ahead and give yourself plenty of power headroom. Are
you fascinated with blinky lights? There are some "do it yourself" projects
that add lights to various modules, and since lights eat power, you should
plan accordingly. If you're planning on more than one case, then you'll
need to distribute the power between the cases - a DIY project.
Alternatively, you can cut the gordian knot and buy a MOTM-900 for each
addl. case.
Alas, anything other than the MOTM-900 is going to be DIY. Don't worry -
this is part of the fun of building your own modular! It shouldn't be a big
project. It's just a matter of mounting a replacement power supply
somewhere within the case, removing the wiring from the old supply (mounted
to the 900) and wiring up the replacement supply in it's place. The
connections should be the same, albeit longer. Use shrink tubing, insulated
spade/lug terminals or electrical tape for safety. I recommend the Power
One dual output supply HCC15-3-A (DigiKey 179-2073-ND) as a replacement
instead of a triple output supply, since MOTM modules do not require the 5V
output. It provides +-15V @ 3A which should be good for about 80 powered
modules or so. The MOTM-900 PCB provides only 12 power connectors, so you
may want to pick up a MOTM-960 power distribution board, as it provides 24
connectors.
I have already have more than one 40U case worth of modules, so I plan on
designing a multi-case module-based distribution scheme that will
(hopefully) look the part. =^) At some point, I'll put this on my web
site. Oh... I have to build the web site, too... Oh well.
Cheers,
George Kisslak

Subject: [motm] More Power Needed.
Hello there fellow MOTM users.
I am new to the list, so if my questions seem redundant, I
apologize. I am about to exceed my 18 module limit for my MOTM 900
power supply and was wondering if anyone would be interested in
helping me build a larger one. Thanks to Dave Bradley's website for
making me aware of:
Power One #HCAA-60W-A, +15V@1.0A, -15V@1.0A, +5V@6A
Digi-Key #179-2071-ND, 1-9 $94.00
Power One #HCBB-75W-A, +15V@1.5A, -15V@1.5A, +5V@6A
Digi-Key #179-2072-ND, 1-9 $109.67
I am of very limited technical experience and am actually a little
afraid of messing around with a power supply. If I purchased one of
the 2 Power One units, how much modification would be required to
install into my MOTM setup? If it is difficult or dangerous, would
anyone with more experience and knowledge be interested in building
one for me? I would of course pay you. If anyone has any suggestions
or interest, please email me. Thanks for all your help.
Harmoniously Yours,
ROY HARTER
