The latest sale catalog from the evil chainstore (the one with the
initials G.C.) had stick-on pizeo triggers by Pintech @ 3 for $30 ...
how could I resist? So I put 'em on the snare, floor tom & rack tom
(I am NOT a drummer; I just happen to own 50% interest in the kit
that sits in my studio), plugged 'em into -800's, and started
pounding the skins.
Wow! Fun stuff.
I actually found it more useful to plug them into the "gate" input of
the -800. That way, the intensity of each drum hit would determine
how far into the attack phase the EG would go, and thereby the
maximum amplitude of the EG output. This would then vary depending
on the setting of the "decay" (which, in "gate-only" mode on the
unmodified -800, actually controls the attack time) knob.
It was also interesting to plug a trigger into the "sync" input of
the -320, so one drum could start the LFO, which would then modulate
the sounds generated by the other two drum triggers. Or to plug a
trigger into the "step" input of an analog sequencer, so that each
hit of the snare would make both toms sound different.
Has anyone else used drum triggers like this to control your
modular? Especially for things other than simulating drum sounds
(seems to me that a sampler would work just fine for that).
Definitely worth checking out for people who (like me) think that
there are more interesting means than keyboards of controlling your
synths ...
