I made good experiences with spray oil like WD 40 or weapon oil. The oil creeps under the glue and makes it loose, but the "creeping" takes an hour or so.

Isopropyl Alcohol is the thing to use on hot glue. It doesn't melt or dissolve it, but breaks the bond so you can just peel if off.  Should be safe to use on most plastics too, just check on a hidden area first.
