Common problem..... the threads on the square Tension Rod tend to strip when overtightened. The pad actually does need that much of a grasp from the internal pad clamp in order to remain fastened in place...

However, remove and take the stripped Rod with you to a music shop and find one of similar length... and unless the other bit in the pad is stripped as well (usually those are stronger than the Lug and less likely to strip) your pad clamp will tighten up nicely. Just don't over tighten....
