Yes, there is no Eprom for the software. But the OS must be somewhere, I think they flashed it onto the one-chip CPU. But: I am not into the 1000, I don't really know. May be there is only one OS version working WITH or WITHOUT Midi.
Add the components and you will see. Do you have the schematics?

I opened up my SDS1000 (non-MIDI) last night and it doesn't have an additional EPROM for the program, just one for the snare sample. It uses an 8051 (with built-in ROM) rather than the 8031 that most of the other Simmons units use.

So in this case I guess I couldn't upgrade mine to MIDI ?
