Thanks for the photo and the link - it does look like foam, which makes sense as the seller said to me the front just fell apart over the years. I had assumed it was chipboard covered with cloth but obviously not, but I might go down that route to restore it.
Hi Patrice - thanks as usual for your comments about the unit - I was after close-up photos of the cover so I could work out the shape and try to reproduce it. But I'd also like to know more details about the blue hexagon...
