As I said in my earlier post, WHEN I get some time I will put together a series of files etc that should enable others to "midify" there SDS6's. It isn't a 5 min job as the midi section is mounted on the output board (which is different from the non midi units)and will require reverse engineering if it is to be available as an "addon" for exiting units. Be patient and I hope sometime soon I can find the time to do this.

I think it has a few appealing characteristics - firstly it just looks great! second, they are pretty rare - I think less than 300 were made, but it could be a lot less, there are certainly not many still alive today so they have a certain cachet. Thirdly, unlike any other drum/trigger sequencer or midi to trigger interface I can think of, it is specifically designed to interface with Simmons gear, so the trigger voltages are much higher than the usual 5v. Also, the dynamic programming is a great feature, especially when driving an SDS7.

The midi implementation is really rudimentary, just midi clock and start/stop functions but allows it to work with other sequencers. When I get time I hope to work up a small PCB that can be fitted to existing units to update them to midi. The main cpu is simply unplugged, the new pcb is fitted into the existing cpu socket, then you plug the cpu into the addon board. The new pcb will contain the required components for midi. Also the existing eprom will need to be replaced with one I will copy from my unit. this has all the added midi code required to run it all.
