Nothing can be damaged when inserting batteries backwards. So, I think, the grainy sound comes from another point: The ZIF.
I do it like this: Insert the EPROM and close the ZIF socket only like half, so that you can move the EPROM from side to side. If you do this a few times, you remove stains and dirt from the ZIFs contacts and from the EPROM legs.
