just bought a sds 5 bass drum and its just what i thought ,the surface is one quarter inch puck board used in hockey arenas in canada $200.00 per sheet black or white.Looks like they backed it up with plywood to keep it flat so ill have to add that to the pads i made.thought you might want to know to renew your surfaces.
