Retrofitting a backlit lcd is a really easy swap...
I used this display:
http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/el/elektronik/optokomponenter/lcd-displayer/lcd-display-p90215(In Swedish, sorry...)
The only difference is that it requires positive voltage for the lcd contrast instead of the original display that uses negative voltage... Otherwise, looks awsome and is way more easy to read in the dark :-)
