Subject: Re: [Simmons Drums] SDX "The Destroyer" - problem

From: "fabiobarker" <fabiobarker@...>

1) I have the omniflop and I know how to use it and not always works , depends of the floppy disc, but is not the kind backup that I want.
2)I don't know what HxC is
3) My SDX works normally and all the functions are normal apart from the hum noise in the channels due to a power supply capacitor that blowed some time ago, easy and cheap to replace (the power supply is made by normal parts not custom parts)
4) The problems are not the replacement parts,I have a source for that and I know 2 or 3 people who can fix any problem in the sdx if I have the spare broken part.
5) I know about people who have SDX's in perfect working order, just they don't help for free.

I just want to know the process to add a external zip drive, you said that is not a simple process, yes, I know, but who knows how to do it and wants to help getting no profit in return? that's the point...

Thank you man

> I did think about replacing my floppy drive with an HxC floppy emulator. It should be about 3 times faster than a normal drive and having SDX data in floppy sized chunks is the only way to really see what the data is(unless someone has a custom program they coded themselves)
> There is a program called Awave that claims to support the SDX MIDI sample dump format files but this is rubbish, because the SDX stores audio as a PCM/.wav type file. That is to say that you can extract the raw data for an audio file and rename it a wav and windows would play the sound.
>
> If you are dealing with hard drives or zip drives everything is faster, but you have to deal with raw data images that are the size of your disk/hard drive and cannot be recognised by any program as being SDX data. I don't know of any programs on a PC that you could plug an SDX Hard drive into and actually see your patches and instruments.

> If you have a power supply problem then it needs fixing. There are 3 custom gate array chips in the SDX. You cannot buy them. If one blows on a voice board, then you are down to 8 voices. If the one on the CPU board dies then you have an expensive bulky doorstop on your hands.
> The HC type logic chips used in the SDX are quite tolerant of  varying power supply but they shouldn't be operating at more than 5.5v.
> The SDX costs money to keep working properly, because people don't sell them if they are working, they only sell them if there is a problem. There is no such thing as someone selling a perfectly 100% working SDX.
> If you are thinking that your SDX will last another 20 odd years without you being patient and trying to learn enough about electronics testing or paying someone else to have a look at it (good luck, I haven't met anyone yet who is keen to service an SDX) then it may die soon. I am hearing lots of stories about people with dodgy power supplies and glitch DACs.

> I bought 2 external scsi zip drives, the SDX destroyed both, after the drives had been connected to the SDX it stopped working, the zip drives now lights up but not any other function is working, not eject not read, Fantastic! the SDX is capable to destroy external units! now I feel good!
> When I plugged the scsi zip drive automatically the internal hd stop being recognized by the SDX, not on the list not anywhere in the SDX system, simply the SDX doean't recognize hd or external zip anymore, just the floppy drive (Don't tell me to read the fu∗∗∗∗g manual or the tutorial to format the hd because this have nothing to do with that).

> Then just one option, I can use the SDX with a internal hd, I tried a internal scsi zip drive and didn't recognize it either, then I'm stuck with a f'ing internal hd, this have to do with "how the hd was made/programmed?" "have to do with something else?" I really don't know.
> I know is a little complicated in the Simmons world to get help "for free" but if somebody knows why this happened I apreciate the help before give up and sell it to another person who's very interested in this useless piece of sh∗t.
