It might be OK with a 500mA fuse in there.
The coating on the wires is usually enamel, and needs at least 400-415°C to burn it off. It smells bad when it burns, which is how you can tell that the solder is getting through.

I managed to get it going... It seemed to have been the coating on the wires had too good insulating properties... :-)

Btw. What's the fuse when set to 240V? Is it 1A/250V?
(When set to 110V it had a 2A/250V fuse)
