Changing out the sounds is easy - just remove the four thumb screws, gently slide out the cards and even more gently remove the eproms. Just make sure that the alignment keys to the cards stay in the socket - otherwise when you re-install the card it may not align correctly with the socket. Also, make sure you're putting like-valued eproms in their respective sockets - meaning 8k eproms in Bass and Snare cards, 16k Toms. If you put a 16k in an 8k card only half of the sample will play. If you put an 8k in a 16k the sample will play twice. You can also modify your cards to play whatever size eprom you like - 8k, 16k, 32k. Not super tricky but maybe not a good first time soldering test. And, finally, I recommend installing ZIF sockets on your cards to make swapping eproms easier.
If you need eproms, I can help you out. I have a decent library of Simmons sounds and samples of pretty much every drum machine ever made. Or, you can send me audio files of sounds you like. PM me and we can work out the details.
Best of luck.

While using my SDS7 kit over the last 20+ years, I've always thought about changing the samples on each card to bass drum, snare & tom samples that have a bit more oomph to them - replace the factory chips in other words. I haven't been able to work out how best to do that however.
