To me compressing Edrums is a necessity.
But there's probably an overall analysis to make.
from what you're saying I feel coming the following questions ( but I might be wrong).
do you need acoustic drum that are sending another sound in more than the SDS400...
What about arrangements ? do you have some space in your music to make distinct each sound.
What about musicians ? are they playing & filling all the space they can ???
What about the bass player ? the Drummer ? etc etc etc...
Before compressing & using the Simmons, does it sound by itself in acoustic for example ?
I have always been said "Less is more" ;-)
& the Simmons becomes one more pollution if nothing's done to give it some space...
I've personnally 've been using the TC DBmax multiband compressor with a very good dynamic.
But a lot of othergear can do the (or better) job. DBX 160 maybe ?
or even Tube compressors... it will make the Simmons very warm & dynamic.
SSL preamps & compressors of course should kick quite efficiently :-)
Good luck

Objet: [Simmons Drums] SDS 400 used live in a loud band, any tips?
Hi,
I've been using an SDS 400 in my live band for about a year now. We are
comprised of bass, guitar, and drums, with lots of effects processing on the
guitars. Our stage volume is rather loud [ working on that, heh ], and we're
tying to figure out some ways to boost the volume of the SDS 400. We run
triggers on our acoustic drum kit: floor tom, hi tom, low tom, and kick. The
kick and the toms are on the quiet side, it seems the tones themselves are
rather soft. Unfortunately our drummer has not been playing for long and his
touch can be erratic, causing the SDS 400 to not always trigger properly and
I have to keep adjusting the sensitivity live. To compensate we run each
output from the SDS 400 into it's own input on a rack mixer but this still
leaves much to be desired. We are wondering if anyone has any suggestions
for live mixing with these units to get a consistent, loud output and if
anyone has used compressors, specific EQing, limiters/enhancers etc on their
kits live?
Thanks, Dion
